5 Signs You May Need a New Roof

If there is water dripping through your ceiling when it rains, you can be pretty sure it is time to call a roofing contractor. But, not all roof problems are quite so obvious. If you see any of these signs of trouble on your roof, it may be time to look at replacement options.

1. Mold or Moss Growing on Your Roof
Sometimes, mold can take up residence on your roof. Although it is easy to dismiss as harmless, mold and moss can wreak havoc on an otherwise sound roof.

Their roots can penetrate under shingles, causing lifting and seepage. This can quickly lead to moisture getting trapped under the roof material, which can lead to rot and decay of your wooden roof sheathing.

If you notice any mold or moss starting to appear, have it cleaned off your roof. You might also want to look into having trees near the house trimmed or thinned out. However, if that moss has been around a while, the damage may already be done. Let a qualified roofing contractor like Champion Roofing inspect the roof to see if it needs to be replaced.

2. Bare Spots on Shingles
Asphalt roof shingles are covered with a layer of grit. It is what gives them the color and appearance you are used to. Over time, that grit beings to fall off, leaving the shingles vulnerable to damage. Bare spots on shingles are a sign that your roofing material is no longer doing its job.

Keep an eye on your shingles throughout the year, checking for wear or thinning spots. One of the easiest ways to spot shedding shingles is by checking your gutters. If there is a sudden uptick in gravel and grit, then your shingles are letting you know they should be replaced soon.

3. Lifting, Torn, or Missing Shingles
Of course, sometimes roofing materials get damaged in other ways. Sometimes a falling branch can dislodge or crack shingles. Any shingles that are missing or torn will need to be replaced.

Lifting corners is another concern, and it is a good indication that your roof is nearing the end of its life. This can allow water and debris to get up under shingles, causing damage to the wood underneath.

4. Wavy Patterns in the Roofline
Dips or waves in the boards that make up your roof are a sign of serious trouble. There may be moisture trapped between the roofing material and wooden underlayment, which could lead to your roof becoming unstable.

5. It Is More Than 20 Years Old
Sometimes, age just catches up with a roof. Although many modern roofs are designed to last for many years, the probability of failure goes up after about 20 years. Have an older roof inspected for damage and wear and tear regularly to avoid problems, and start preparing for the inevitable replacement that will be needed.
